Born in 1991 in Kolkata, Sumit Sarkar graduated in Painting from The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in 2014 and Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Kala Bhavana, Visvabharata, Santiniketan in 2016. The artist is a recipient of a number of awards like the Late Sanjay Haridas Jagdale Award for Best Entry, Mumbai and Kala Sakshi Memorial Trust Award, New Delhi both in 2015, to name a few. Sarkar is also a scholarship holder of the Kala Sakshi Memorial Trust Scholarship 2015 and Ministry of Culture, Scholarship to Young Artiste in Painting 2016. Sarkar has exhibited his work in various exhibitions including the 7th Beijing International Art Biennale, China [2017], 17th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh [2016] and 123rd Annual Exhibition of Art [Bombay Art society], Mumbai [2015] amongst others and has attended a number of workshops in India and abroad like Southport College, Bill Swaan in UK et al.
For Sarkar, his childhood memories, knowledge and life experiences are what inspires him and eventually reflects in his work. Along with socio-economic conditions in the society, myths and mythologies also play an integral part in his recent works.
