MADHURJYA DEYBorn in: 1996
India

Madhurjya Dey has been developing a fictional narrative that revolves around a place, a real place. Once fictionalized, the place loses some of the details but provides an area of entering the reality of the not so real. The entire town is connected by the sound waves created by FLS speakers announcing any piece of information relevant. The Information and Public Relations Department install fixed Loud Speaker System (FLS) covering 12.79 km square. Announcements develop a sense of tension and constant uncertainty, often with a verdict, addressing various common issues, which inevitably impact a unit.

The visual representation of the unreal atmosphere is derived from memory and partially referred images where text plays an important role, describing the not shown and the difference in timeline.

The images formed are a direct reference to the mountainous landscape. The work “announcement, 9:39 am, 1989” takes off from an altitude of about 663 metres, where from the eye travels covering kilometres in all directions possible. The horizon slowly shape shifts as we enter various sections of it and observes the perforations.

Doors, windows, and light allowing elements, where sound travels faster than light, perforate the landscape. These perforations are visited whenever the FLS speakersare used to make announcements (time specific).

Now there are few perforations that never got activated, the interior breathes dust. All the time-determining elements are unheard, only witnessed by sight.

Some sections within the space stay stationary. They are just there waiting for a touch, like the dust awaits rain.

In isolation, the abandoned objects translate its surroundings to a place that is known, outside, beyond the periphery where the horizon appears. Objects become memory, as they stay untouched, not visited, slowly forgotten.
